Careers > Under Represented Groups
The Outreach Team consists of several of our staff who are active in encouraging people from under-represented groups to consider a career with us. We do this by engaging in positive action – where we promote our service to under-represented groups before any recruitment cycle commences.
This enables us to raise awareness of a career as a firefighter to those who traditionally have not considered this role as a career of choice. We find that by sharing information about the tasks we carry out with our diverse communities, we can attract a wider pool of talent to help shape our modern service. Our Outreach Team attend events in your local community to carry out this work. Information on the events that we attend are advertised below.
Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service (LBFRS), in its service delivery capacity, is under-represented by women, black and minority ethnic people, LGBT groups and those with a disability. It is our aim to engage meaningfully with our communities to share knowledge of what we do, learn how we can provide a service that understands the different needs of our communities and to raise awareness of a career as a firefighter in the hope that we inspire more people from minority groups to apply.
Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service is committed to employing a diverse workforce and strives to correct the under representation of particular groups and promote equality of opportunity in employment and progression within the Service.
An effective Fire and Rescue Service relies on consent, trust and strong partnership, between itself and the community. This can be achieved if those delivering the service are representative of the community that we serve.
Positive Action refers to a number of activities employed by an organisation, which are designed to counteract the effects of past discrimination and to minimise stereotyping. Action can be taken to encourage individuals from particular groups to take advantage of opportunities for work and training. This can be done where under representation of particular groups has been identified.
These initiatives are aimed at attracting people to consider us an employer of choice, knowing that their application will be treated equally and that selection is done on the basis of merit and the ability of that individual to carry out the job.
An important point to remember is that Positive Action activities stop at the point of selection. From then on all candidates must be treated equally and fairly throughout the selection process.
In this respect, a true equal opportunities employer will recruit the people that come out top of any recruitment process so this initiative is to provide information to under-represented groups, enabling them to make informed decisions on suitability for a career as a firefighter prior to applying along with mainstream candidates.
