Who is the Course aimed at

The course is aimed at personnel who have to wear CABA in order to safely carry out tasks in an irrespirable atmosphere.

These students may be part of a works firefighting team or an emergency response team, who may have to deal with an emergency incident in its initial stages. They may be called upon to effect a rescue of trapped or injured persons.

The course will give the student the necessary skills required to carry out tasks safely and efficiently and possibly take steps in order to stabilise a situation prior to the arrival of the Emergency Services.

A prerequisite for this course is that students attending must be fit and in good health.

Objectives - at the end of the course the Student will be able to:

  • Understand the basic operation of the standard BA set
  • Understand and demonstrate the functioning of the BA ancillary equipment
  • Demonstrate set maintenance, periodic testing and recording procedures
  • Demonstrate the correct donning procedures to be adopted at incidents
  • Demonstrate ability to progress through a hostile environment in a safe & controlled manner, whilst wearing CABA
  • Work effectively as a team member/team leader, of a CABA team, carrying out tasks including casualty recovery
  • Demonstrate ability to tackle fire in a safe and controlled manner
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively control BA team(s) using standard Entry Control procedures
  • Be aware of the limitations of CABA

Assessment Process

During the course students will be assessed on their skills performance. This will be assessed on a continuous basis by the Course Instructors. Failure to achieve any of the required course objectives will result in further training needs being identified.

Certificate Issue

A certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course and sent to the individual’s work address.
