Training for organisations and business
For many years, the SIFTC has trained staff from the commercial and private sectors in safety courses, including fire safety, fire marshal and fire risk management. The centre is the hub of many major projects involving large financial organisations and is currently working with other fire and rescue services to ensure that the delivery of this training is carried out to a highest of standards. The centre maintains quality of product through the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system.
Merchant and industrial training
The Centre prides itself in its specialist training capabilities, delivering training to the merchant fleets and to industrial fire teams.
The merchant navy requires staff to have completed a basic firefighting course, which the SIFTC can deliver and certificate. We also deliver an advanced firefighting command and control course.
Both these courses are MCA approved and are delivered to meet the requirements of the STCW95 Code. Refresher courses and ‘tailored made’ courses are also available for both the merchant navy and the commercial field.
Industrial business such as power plants, chemical production plants and liquefied petroleum gas storage facilities often have fire teams who would act as a limited first response. The centre delivers training to many of these teams and can give advice and if required develop a course specifically designed for a particular organisation. Training can be carried out at the real fire facility or at our ship module, which has recently been completely refitted with multiple gas/LPG fire training simulators and is a unique training venue.
In house firefighter training
As well as providing fire training for organisations and businesses, the Scottish International Fire Training Centre is where the firefighters of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service receive fire training. The centre features a real fire training facility where firefighters can train within a safe and controlled environment. The Centre also specialises in training such as BAI refresher and Trainee BA (Breathing Apparatus) courses.
