95 - ADVANCED MARINE FIREFIGHTING Course
Course
Philosophy
Students attending this course will be senior Mercantile Marine Officers.
These Officers may be required to form the command structure of shipboard
fire parties and to direct and control fire emergency situations. This
course is aimed at Officers who require to organise, train and direct
shipboard fire parties and who may require to wear CABA to fulfil these
duties.
The
pre-requisites for the course are:
1.
Officers must meet the criteria laid down by the Merchant Navy Training
Board regarding a Basic Firefighting Course.
2.
The Officer requires to be fit and in good health.
Course
Aim
To train the Officer in all the principles of shipboard firefighting
emergency organisation. To give the Officer the necessary skills required
to train others in the procedures to be adopted in the use of equipment
provided to bring a fire on board ship to a safe and controlled conclusion.
Course
Objectives
At the end of the course, the Officer will be able to:-
1.
Will have had revision training on the basic science of fire.
2.
Will have had revision training on fixed firefighting and detection
systems.
3.
Will have had revision training on shipboard fire prevention measures
and
structural fire protection.
4.
Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of shipboard fire organisation:
- Pre-planning and firefighting strategies.
- Training, how and what to teach. How to devise, carry out and de-brief
training exercises.
- Control and communication.
5.
Demonstrate an ability to operate safely and effectively in all command
positions and fire party member roles, under simulated fire emergency
situations.
6.
Demonstrate an ability to progress through a hostile environment in
a
safe and controlled manner.
7.
Wear and operate CABA with confidence in a safe and correct manner.
8.
Demonstrate an understanding of the limitations of CABA.
9.
Work effectively as part of a CABA team and carry out tasks including
firefighting and the search for and rescue of casualties from a hostile
environment on board a ship.
10.
Demonstrate an ability to tackle fire in a safe and controlled manner.
11.
Demonstrate the ability to correctly remove injured persons from a risk
area.
Assessment
Process
During the course, there are two areas of attainment which are assessed.
These areas are:
1.
Underpinning knowledge, and
2.
Skills performance.
The
underpinning knowledge is assessed using a pre and post assessment paper
system. These assessment papers cover the subjects taught on the course.
The
skills performance is assessed on a continuous basis throughout the
course by the course instructors.
Failure
to achieve any of the required course objectives will result in further
training needs being identified and addressed. Ultimate failure will
result in a certificate not being issued.

Issue
On successful completion of the course, a certificate will be issued
by the SIFTC.
