STCW 95 (Basic) - FIRE PREVENTION AND FIREFIGHTING Course (3-day)

Course Philosophy
Students attending this course will be from the Mercantile Marine Industry.

These students may be required to form part of a shipboard fire party, who may be required to deal with an outbreak of fire in its incipient or more advanced stages and to rescue trapped or injured persons.

This course is aimed at students who require to wear CABA in order to carry out tasks safely and efficiently and to teach them the operation of equipment provided. Also taught are the procedures to be followed to stabilise an emergency situation.

A pre-requisite for the course is that all students are fit and in good health.

Course Aims
To train the student in the correct use of CABA and give an understanding of the safe and correct methods to adopt in a shipboard fire emergency.

To train the student in the correct procedures to carry out when firefighting and carrying out search and rescue operations on board a ship.

To make the student aware of causes of fire and fire prevention measures on board a ship.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:-

1. Be aware of the need for a shipboard firefighting organisation.

2. Be aware of the basic science of fire.

3. Be aware of fixed shipboard firefighting and fire detection systems.

4. Be aware of shipboard fire prevention measures and structural fire protection.

5. Be able to demonstrate an ability to progress through a hostile environment in a safe and controlled manner.

6. Be able to wear and operate CABA with confidence and in the correct manner.

7. Be aware of the limitations of CABA.

8. Be able to work effectively as part of a CABA team, carry out tasks including firefighting and the search for and rescue of casualties from a hostile environment on board a ship.

9. Demonstrate an ability to tackle a fire in a safe and controlled manner.

10. Demonstrate an ability to correctly remove injured persons from a risk area.

Assessment Process
During the course, there are two areas of attainment which are assessed. These areas are:-

1. Underpinning knowledge and

2. Skills performance.

The underpinning knowledge is assessed using a pre and post assessment paper system. These assessment papers cover the subjects taught on the course.

The skills performance is assessed on a continuous basis throughout the course by the course instructors.

Failure to achieve any of the required course objectives will result in further training needs being identified and addressed. Ultimate failure to attain these objectives will result in a certificate not being issued to that student.

Certificate Issue
On successful completion of the course, a certificate will be issued by the SIFTC.
