When most people think of the Fire and Rescue Service they think of firefighters, fire engines and fire. However, the emergency services we provide are much wider and more varied than this. As well as fighting fires of all sizes and types, we attend minor and major Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs).
Maybe surprisingly, we rescue more people from RTAs than we do from fires. Our line rescue teams carry out rescues from heights in all sorts of situations. We also deal with water rescues and have firefighting at sea capability. Other types of rescues we would deal with include confined space rescues (ie. sewers, tunnels, etc.), structural collapse (ie. buildings, scaffolding), lift rescues, people trapped in machinery (ie. industrial, agricultural). As well as people, we also rescue animals of all kinds from many different situations, yes, including the odd kitten stuck up a tree.
We also deal with incidents involving hazardous materials such as chemicals, biological agents, gases, radioactive substances and the like. We also have the capability for mass public decontamination in the event of a major incident of this type. We also attend incidents involving electricity, such as rescues of people trapped in sub stations or on pylons.
The Fire and Rescue Service attend rail incidents, aircraft incidents involving fire or rescues. We also deal with flooding whether in buildings and premises or caused by adverse weather conditions.
Whether fighting fires, performing rescues, carrying out humanitarian services or protecting the environment the Fire and Rescue Service operational personnel are backed up by highly trained, skilled and dedicated Control Room Staff. These people coordinate and control the Fire and Rescue Service’s response to all incidents as well as providing expert advice and guidance to the public in times of emergency.
