17 January 2012 -Three suffer smoke inhalation in Edinburgh cooking fires last night
Crews from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service were called out twice in just over an hour in the early evening yesterday (16th January) to cooking related fires.
The first incident at 5.10pm, a pan of food alight, resulted in a 74-year-old woman requiring treatment by paramedics, at the property on Academy Park in Leith.
Then just over an hour later, three fire engines and a height appliance from McDonald Road and Crewe Toll were called out to sheltered housing on Goldenacre Terrace at 6.14pm. Two females aged 83 and 58 also received treatment at the scene by firefighters and paramedics. This was also a pan of food alight.
Both fires were extinguished prior to the arrival of the fire and rescue service. All casualties were suffering from smoke inhalation.
A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “These incidents are prime examples of how fires can start so easily when you are simply cooking your tea. As general safety advise we would advise residents to never leave their cooking unattended or allow a pan to overheat. If a fire does break out in your kitchen, turn off the heat if it is safe to do so then leave the room closing the door behind you, and call the fire and rescue service out on 999. Never try to move a pan of food alight or try to extinguish a blaze yourself.
“For a free home safety visit, and to get a free smoke alarm fitted by firefighters, call 0800 169 0320.”
