18 January 2012 - Kitchen fires in Edinburgh and West Lothian
A 50-year-old woman was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation by paramedics after her grill pan ignited yesterday evening (17th January).
Two fire engines and a height appliance were called to Whitson Road in Edinburgh at 5.51pm to reports of a fire in the kitchen of the terraced house. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using a fire blanket. The casualty was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew.
Later in the evening, at 10.37pm, crews were called to another kitchen fire, in West Lothian, at Blackfaulds Drive in Fauldhouse. Firefighters used a high-pressure hose reel and breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze, which was well alight on arrival of the Fire and Rescue Service.
Eleven firefighters attended the fire at the ground floor flat, which suffered fire damage and the property above was affected by smoke logging. No one was injured in the fire.
A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “These are the third and fourth kitchen fires the Service has attended in two days, and we urge people to exercise caution in the kitchen. As general safety advise we would advise residents to never leave their cooking unattended or allow a pan to overheat. If a fire does break out in your kitchen, turn off the heat if it is safe to do so then leave the room closing the door behind you, and call the fire and rescue service out on 999. Never try to move a pan of food alight or try to extinguish a blaze yourself.
