23 January 2012 - Injury caused by candle fire, Edinburgh

A 26-year-old female suffered burns to her hands and smoke inhalation after trying to extinguish a blaze caused by a candle on Friday night (20th January).

Three fire engines and a height appliance attended the fire at the top floor flat in Polwarth Crescent at 7.54pm. Firefighters extinguished the fire and treated the casualty with oxygen and administered first aid for slight burns to her hands until the ambulance arrived. The woman was taken to hospital for further treatment.

A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Spokeswoman said: “This fire started after a candle fell onto the floor and the carpet caught alight. We strongly advise residents never to attempt to extinguish a fire yourself, as they can get out of control extremely fast and vital time to escape is wasted while you put yourself at risk. Smoke inhalation can be very serious and overcome a person quickly, by which time it could be too late to call the Fire and Rescue Service and get out.

“Please take extra care with candles, always set them on a stable surface in a holder and never leave them unattended.”
