19 August 2008 - Museum of Fire Open Weekends

For the first time, the Museum of Fire in Edinburgh will be opening its doors to visitors at the weekend this August.
For the next two weekends only (23rd, 24th August and 30th, 31st August) the museum, which is at the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, EH3 9DE will be open 11am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is FREE.
Normally only available by appointment visitors can pop in anytime between 11am and 4pm and talk to knowledgeable staff about historical artefacts, fire engines, and log books dating back to the 1800s. Visitors can also discover the history of one of the oldest municipal fire brigades in the world.
Visits are free, with disabled access available. Other interesting pieces include firefighting equipment dating back hundreds of years, uniforms from throughout the ages, and of course the headquarters building itself which was a working Fire Station from 1900 until 1986.
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn all about the history of the famous first municipal fire brigade and the father of fire fighting James Braidwood.
