26 August 2008 - Mela Challenge
Firefighters and Police Officers from Lothian and Borders will be going head to head in an indoor rowing race, organised in conjunction with the Mela later this month.
Competitors will have to complete one full minute on the rowing machine. The distance that they record will be added together and the team that covers the furthest distance will be declared the winners.
Councillor Mike Bridgman, Convener of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said ‘This rowing challenge aims to entertain those watching at the Mela, to be fun and to promote a bit of healthy competition between the Fire and Rescue Service and the Police. Events like these, and the Mela as a whole, forge relationships between all partner organisations which help our work in moving towards our aim of a safer community.’
Supported by the City of Edinburgh Council, the Scottish Arts Council and sponsored by Forth Ports, the Mela is a celebration of cultural diversity. Mela is a South Asian festival and a Sanskrit word which means gathering. The festival celebrates cultural diversity through various art forms such as music, dance and theatre as well as other activities for everyone to enjoy.
The indoor rowing race is taking place during the Mela weekend, beside Ocean Terminal on Sunday 30th August at 3pm.
