03 October 2008 - Councillor joins Fire Crew for Night Shift
Louise Lang, a member of the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Board will be learning about the work of a Firefighter first hand when she joins the Watch at McDonald Road during their night shift this Saturday.
Convener of the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Board, Mike Bridgman said, ‘Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Board is very supportive of the crucial preventative and operational work the Fire Crews do to protect our communities from fire, and it is good that Councillor Lang has been able to gain this level of experience from observing the firefighters directly.’
Louise will join the Crew on call outs and will also experience life in the Station when the Watch are awaiting their next call.
Keith Dargo, Group Manager for the Service, said "Through our local neighbourhood partnership, Councillor Lang has been extremely supportive of our safety role within the community and I am delighted that she would like to broaden her experience by observing the professional frontline services delivered by our Control Room and operational Firefighters."
Edinburgh Councillor Louise Lang said, ‘The services that our Fire and Rescue Service provide in Edinburgh, the Lothians and across the Borders are vital to the ongoing safety of our residents and our city. Since joining the Fire Board last year, I have been impressed at the level of skill, knowledge and commitment shown by our Firefighters.
‘A few months ago I had the opportunity to spend time with the Crew at McDonald Road and to join them in the various fire prevention initiatives they carry out in the community. I was delighted when they offered to have me back to work a night shift on a Saturday night. It will be a long night with the shift starting at 6 and going on till 10 the next day, but our firefighters do this all the time and I look forward to as real an experience as possible of how they help to protect our communities.’
