31 October 2008 - Remember, Remember, our Fire Safety message for the spooky season
Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service are reminding residents about the dangers that can arise around Halloween and Bonfire Night, and ask people to take extra care at Halloween and Bonfire parties this weekend;
For a happy Halloween:
- Keep candles and lanterns away from furniture or curtains, and always place them on a steady, non-flammable surface. (Nightlights will melt plastic surfaces such as TV tops)
- Keep exits clear of decorations – they may be your escape routes
- Buy only flame resistant costumes for your kids or yourself (or bear this in mind when making them)
- Make sure children know how to stop, drop and roll in the event their clothing catches fire (drop to the ground, cover face with hands, and roll over and over to extinguish flames)
- Keep flammable materials such as crepe paper away from heat sources
For a safe Bonfire Night:
- Do not build bonfires under or near overhead cables, and place them at least 18 metres away from buildings, trees and fences. They should be no higher than 2.5 metres
- Always check the bonfire before lighting it for animals or children who may be hiding in there
- Did you know sparklers get hotter than cooking oil? They injure more people than any other firework. Supervise children and always have a bucket of water readily available to put the sparkler in
- If you suspect your child has an unusual interest in Fire, we are happy to have a chat with them. Call us on 0800 169 0320 for further information
Convener of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Board, Mike Bridgman said, “We want people to have a happy and safe time during these festivities, and ask people to bear the advice in mind. This is our busiest time of year, and we urge the public to attend organised bonfires, as they will be safer and as just as much fun as those you may have at home.”
