4 November 2008 - Fire Rescue at Castle View House
At 10.34pm last night, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls about a fire in the first floor common area of Castle View House at Craigour Place in Edinburgh. The call came from residents saying they were trapped in their flats by smoke.
Appliances responded from Liberton, Dalkeith, Newcraighall and Tollcross Fire Stations
The first appliances arrived minutes after the first call. They were met with a developing fire on the first floor, severe smoke logging in the central staircase and residents hanging out of widows on the first floor calling for help.
The Officer in Charge and crews of the initial attendance carried out what can only be described as an outstanding piece of firefighting; they not only managed to carry out 16 rescues using fire service ladders but also attacked the fire on the first floor bringing it quickly under control.
Carrying out rescues with fire service ladders is always a demanding task as it requires split second timing and exact precision; the crews carried this out quickly and safely. This can be accredited to their professionalism and training.
As soon as the fire was brought under control the crews carried out a full and complete search of the flats to make sure there were no other casualties. Following this, a further two casualties were led out of the building suffering from smoke inhalation.
In total six casualties were removed to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation - four adults and two children. Six breathing apparatus wearers, one line of hose and two fire service ladders were used to carry out the rescues and tackle the fire.
