21 December 2004 - Unique Training Contract for Brigade and Scottish Parliament

In preparation for the move to The Scottish Parliament’s new Holyrood campus earlier this year, it was recognised that the occupation of the new building with its sophisticated fire strategy and related systems; would require a high level of awareness and training for all its permanent occupants.

As a result of The Parliament’s procurement process, Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade were successful in being awarded the contract for this specialist training.

The Scottish Parliament required all permanent occupants of the Holyrood campus to attend a half-day training course held at the Brigade’s Scottish International Fire Training Centre located at Macdonald Road , Edinburgh .

The training course, which covered basic fire prevention and fire issues relating directly to the new building, also included sessions on practical use of fire extinguishers and an experience of moving through a smoke filled room.

This unique training course has not only attracted overwhelming positive anecdotal feedback from attendees, but the training centre’s own ISO 9001: 2000 Business Management System has indicated a 95% overall satisfaction response from delegates.

On the final day of the current contract The Parliament’s Clerk and Chief Executive Mr Paul Grice who attended a session held at the centre said,

“The training has been a valuable and enjoyable experience for people working in the Parliament. We have been impressed by the professionalism and friendliness of the Fire Brigade trainers. I would like to express my personal thanks to them for helping to make the move to Holyrood safe and successful”.

Mr Wayne McCollin, Assistant Firemaster and Director of Personnel and Training for Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade said “The Brigade has welcomed working with the Scottish Parliament on these training sessions and commends the management and staff at Holyrood for their positive attitude to making their working environment safer”.

  • Over 60 half-day sessions delivered between July and December.
  • Nearly 800 delegates have attended to date.
  • Attendees have included the Chief Executive, Directors and members of the Parliament’s senior management team, as well as representatives from all areas of the campus.
