15 February 2005 - Lothian And Borders Fire Brigade Receives Health Award

Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade have received the Scotland’s Health at Work (SHAW) Silver Award, presented by Dr Andrew Cubie, the Chairman of SHAW.

Dr Cubie congratulated the Brigade in this achievement and said that “it is important that organisations are involved in this scheme, as not only does it encourage employers to improve the health and welfare of all employees, but it also gives a framework on which initiatives can be developed.”

Assistant Firemaster, Wayne McCollin, said that ‘working towards the Award had given greater structure to the Brigade’s activities in occupational health and fitness and he welcomed the challenge presented by now going for gold.”

Scotland ’s Health at Work is a Government sponsored initiative that rewards organisations for their efforts and achievements in building a healthy workforce, workplace and organisation. There are three levels of award: bronze, silver and gold. For each level there are core criteria plus additional criteria that need to be met before progressing onto the next level. The Bronze SHAW award was achieved by the Brigade in February 2004.

Along with maintaining the Bonze and Silver awards the Brigade is now in the process of working towards the Gold award. This involves developing medium and long term strategies in improving health issues within the organisation, such as initiatives to support National Depression Week, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including the annual Race for Life, and taking part in Health Fairs.
