08 February 2005 - Fire Services Join Forces for a New Recruitment Programme

Four fire services in Scotland have come together to jointly recruit firefighters to meet the needs of the future.

Central Scotland , Dumfries and Galloway , Fife Fire and Rescue Service, and Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade have established a Joint Recruitment Board that will manage and administer the selection and recruitment process for the foreseeable future.   The Board has appointed a recruitment Co-ordinator who will support the work of the collaboration.

A review of the selection procedures carried out in each of the services identified that there were significant benefits to be gained by working together.

Assistant Firemaster Wayne McCollin, who represents Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade on the Board says, “Recruitment is one of a number of issues that fire services are looking to work together on.  In this case we will see a pooling of resources and best practice to recruit and select firefighters in the most effective and efficient way . A dedicated hotline number will be set up to deal with all enquiries and provide application information.  Any potential applicants are asked to look in the press and our websites for more details . ”

The Fire Service is actively looking to increase the numbers of women and those coming from under represented sections of the community and this will be a key aim for the Board.  A number of open days will take place across the region and those interested should look out for notices in schools, colleges, universities, fitness centres and community centres, as well as adverts in the local press.
