04 January 2012 - Stair fire on Morrison Street
Ten people were advised to stay inside their third floor flat during a fire in the stairwell of the block of flats on Morrison Street on Monday (2nd January).
Three fire engines and a height appliance attended the fire after the call came in at 12.20am. A member of the Control Room gave fire survival guidance and reassured the occupants of the flat until crews arrived.
Crews used a high-pressure hose real and breathing apparatus to extinguish the rubbish on fire. Firefighters also used a height appliance to reassure those who were trapped.
A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Spokeswoman said: “Stair fires can be extremely frightening for those in the affected building. If a fire does start in the stairwell or hall of your block of flats, stay inside your flat in the room furthest from your front door and call the fire and rescue service, letting them know you are still inside. Trained Control Room staff will provide you with fire survival guidance until firefighters arrive at the scene
“Luckily no-one was injured in this fire, however fires in stairwells can spread very quickly, and can cause thick, acrid smoke when rubbish is set alight. We would urge residents to ensure their stairwells are kept clear of rubbish and flammable items which can be attractive to firesetters.”
