19 September 2008 - Firefighters Saddle up for 600 Mile Charity Cycle/h4>

On Sunday, 21st September 2008, eight Firefighters from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service are setting off to cycle 600 miles through five different countries within a week. (Scotland – Northern Ireland – the Republic of Ireland – Wales – England – Scotland).

They are taking on this mammoth cycle to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides support to injured Firefighters during their time of need, assisting over 13,000 individuals every year.

Geoff Aird, one of the cyclists, thought up the idea. He said, ‘We have all been working hard preparing for this demanding challenge mentally and physically. It will be a difficult but rewarding task, and all nine of us are pleased to be doing it to raise money for a worthwhile cause. We’re all looking forward to setting off on Sunday.’

Fellow Firefighter Paul Graham will be assisting the team behind the scenes by buying food for rest breaks, replenishing water bottles and driving on ahead to Youth Hostels each night to book in.

It’s not too late to support the team on their cycle, donations can be made at http://www.justgiving.com/fivecountrieschallenge.
